The 2009 Penguin Plunge!
February 7th, 2009
Middlebury Muffintops joined in raising money for the Special Olympics by diving
into Lake Champlain on February 7th, 2009. The water, balmy 32.5 degrees,
stopped all but the most die-hard swimmers from completing a grueling 40-second,
30-yard workout. Swimmers (well, more like "dunkers", akin to eating donuts) raised
over $5,000 for the event.

About Us…
The Middlebury Muffintops officially
began in 2006, although many of its founding members swam for years as elite members
of the Royal Order of the Water Buffalo. Our fearless leader and muff-in-chief is
Peter Solomon, head coach of the Middlebury College Men’s and Women’s swimming teams.
The Muffintops include swimmers of all levels; some train for fitness, some train
for triathlons, others train for local and national swimming competitions. All of
us train for fun. Workouts are held at Middlebury College’s state-of-the-art 50
meter x 25 yard pool. Typically, there are 2-3 practices a week with an average
workout distance of about 3000 yards. During the summers we also gather at Lake
Dunmore for organized open swims—in fact, our most well-insulated (and arguably
most insane) Muffintops break through the ice and begin open swimming in May.
To join the Muffintops, you must register with New England Masters Swimming and
pay an annual registration fee (www.swimnem.org).
