Meet Recap from Friday, June 20, 2008

The swimmers are here and we have already seen some amazing swims. After only the 800 and 1500 meter freestyle events, already nine new records have been set including a new Canadian national record.

Setting a new national record for Canada, Lynn Marshall from Carleton University Masters swam the women's 45-49 1500 freestyle in a time of 18:14.76, beating her previous record by nearly 17 seconds.  A truly exceptional swimmer, Lynn now holds 8 Canadian national records for her age group in the 200, 400, 800 and 1500 freestyle, the 100 and 200 meter Fly, and the 200 and 400 meter IM.  We're really looking forward to the next two days, as she has signed up for another 10 events over the course of the weekend.

Also from Canada, Paul Boisvert set a Quebecois record in the men's 45-49 800 meter freestyle.  Paul came in with a winning time of 10:19.06.

New England swimmers were also successful, setting seven new records. Middlebury Muffintop Katherine Branch set the record in the women's 50-54 1500 freestyle with a winning time of 20:37.40.

Mike Schmidt, who set 4 New England records last year, started strong, setting a New England record in the Men's 45-49 800 meter freestyle with a time of 9:28.67. John Merrill set a New England record as well, winning the men's 90-94 800 meter freestyle with a time of 20:50.22. The New England Record was also broken in the men's 60-64 1500 meter freestyle by Richard Bernstein with his time of 22:31.10.

Finally, two swimmers set two New England records each. Caitlin Leahy, swimming for Cambridge Masters, set records in both the women's 25-29 800 meter freestyle and in the 1500 meter freestyle, with times of 10:09.26 and 19:23.45. Also toppling two records, John Nunnelly from UMass-Amherst set the New England record in the men's 55-59 800 meter freestyle with a time of 10:35.63 and the 1500 meter freestyle with a time of 20:00.18.

Congratulations to everyone and we wish you the best of luck over the next two days.
